Silicone For Scars - Medical Study Summary

“Silicone gel sheeting is safe and effective treatment for hypertrophic and keloid scars”.
All subjects applied the gel sheeting in the same fashion and wore it for twelve to twenty-four hours per day for at least two months.  After at least 6 months’ follow-up, 56% of the chronic scars were improved.  Eleven of fourteen fresh or recent hypertrophic scars (79%) did not recur after surgery during a similar follow-up period.

Results from at least eight randomized controlled trials and a meta-study of 27 trials demonstrate that silicone gel sheeting is a safe and effective management option for hypertrophic scars and keloids.

“We concluded that topical silicone gel is efficacious, both in prevention and in the treatment of hypertrophic scars”.  We studied the effects of a silicone gel bandage that was worn for at least 12 hours daily on the resolution of hypertrophic burn scar.  Clinical assessment corroborated this quantitative demonstration of a decrement in scar volume.
